Why you should be starting your day with lemon water.
I’ve been working on my digestive health for a few years now, and one day while I was doing some research I came across an article by the Wellness Mama all about why you should be starting your day with lemon water.
I was pretty skeptical at first, but after a couple weeks of drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning I was hooked!
Over the past couple years I’ve been doing more and more research on the health benefits of lemon water, all of which I’ve listed below.
1. Aids in Digestion
One of the biggest benefits I’ve seen from drinking warm lemon water (or just water for that matter) first thing in the morning is the fact that it gets everything moving internally. While you’re sleeping, your body is busy breaking down food; so when you wake up in the morning you can aid in your body’s digestion by drinking about 24 oz. of warm lemon water. Doing so will allow the body to flush the digestive system, and re-hydrate your body.
2. Immunity Booster
Lemons are full of vitamin C! Vitamin C not only keeps colds and the flu at bay, but it stimulates white blood cell production, which is vital for your immune system to function properly. According to Dr. Oz, lemon juice is powerful enough to decrease the strength of the cold and flu virus and reduce phlegm. Add a little honey to your warm lemon water for an added boost in cold fighting nutrients.
Lemons are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function, helps reduce free radicals, and helps control blood pressure.
3. Bile Production
Drinking warm lemon water in the morning is a great way to help your body stimulate proper stomach acid and bile production. This is especially helpful for those of you who have had your gallbladders removed, like me.
4. Clears Skin

Our body’s pH level is the balance between the alkaline and acidic properties in the body. If the body is too acidic, it can breed illness and disease. Although lemon is a citrus fruit, it’s alkaline in the body. By adding more alkaline foods into your diet, your body will begin to repair and heal.
7. Natural remedy for acid reflux
Yep, you heard right. The one thing that has kept my acid reflux at bay is lemon water! Due to their alkalinity, lemons are able to help neutralize acidity in the stomach. I typically only notice my acid reflux in the evening, so as soon as I get home from work I squeeze a quarter of a lemon into my big glass of water and I sip on that the rest of the night. The nights that I forget my lemon water are the nights that I have the worst acid reflux—it’s not a coincidence.
